Careers at Blue Tree
Outdoor Living

We've been designing, building, and maintaining outdoor living spaces across Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1983, bringing 43 years of experience in the industry. With a team of 70 to 90 employees and an average tenure of 13 to 14 years, our people stay because we invest in them, not just in projects. If you're looking for a career where the work matters and the team stays, you're in the right place.

Why People Stay

People stay at Blue Tree Outdoor Living because leadership is accessible and experienced teams work together for years. Employees can build long-term careers in design, project management, field operations, and administration. That continuity helps explain the company's 13 to 14 year average employee tenure.

Blue Tree employs 70 to 90 professionals throughout the year, peaking near 90 in spring and summer and settling closer to 70 as the season changes. The staff includes salaried leadership, 8 or more designers and sales professionals, project managers, administrative staff, and experienced field crews.

Employees can take questions straight to Jeff Mattiola or Chad Ochnich. During the 2008 recession, Blue Tree moved to four 10-hour workdays to keep every employee on payroll. During COVID-19, the company developed safety protocols so crews could keep working and support their families.

Respect for the team and pride in the work have kept people together.

From Crew to Career

Some of the best people on our team started exactly where you might be starting today.

Andrew Mattiola, Pool & Landscape Designer/Sales

Andrew worked summers during high school and college at Blue Tree, eventually serving as a Hardscaping Foreman for three years. He graduated from Penn College of Technology with a degree in Landscape Design/Construction. In 2022, he was promoted to Pool and Landscape Designer/Sales, where he now excels in meeting clients, developing custom designs, and ensuring projects meet the client's vision.
"Being able to build that with my own hands from scratch... it helped me learn how to look at the project and say, okay, should I design this here or over there."

Stephen Roehm, Landscape Designer/Sales

Stephen began his career with Blue Tree Outdoor Living in 2020, working during summers and college breaks, gaining hands-on experience in both softscape and hardscape installations. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Contracting from Penn State University in 2022, Stephen joined our Landscape Design/Sales team. In his current role, he meets clients daily, develops custom designs, and prepares detailed estimates, ensuring that each project aligns with the client's vision and requirements.

John Mattiola, Landscape Designer/Sales

Growing up around the landscaping industry gave John an early appreciation for the craftsmanship, planning, and teamwork behind exceptional outdoor spaces. Since joining Blue Tree he has built hands-on experience across landscaping, hardscaping, masonry, and heavy equipment, then moved into his current role in Design and Sales. A Penn State graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Contracting, he combines formal education, field experience, and a strong understanding of the construction process. John's path shows what is possible here: learn the industry from the ground up, build new skills, and grow into a role that matches your strengths. Today he works directly with homeowners to design outdoor spaces they will enjoy for years to come.

Jose Zavala, Production Manager

Jose's career at Blue Tree is a good example of where hard work, experience, and leadership can lead. He joined in 2011 managing a commercial mowing crew and took on more responsibility as his knowledge and leadership grew. With 26 years in the landscaping industry, he understands both the field and the day-to-day operations that keep projects and teams moving. Today, as Production Manager, he coordinates crews, manages projects, and helps carry Blue Tree's standards for quality and service through from start to finish. His move from crew leadership into management reflects how Blue Tree develops people from within and builds long-term careers in outdoor living.

More Than a Job

Blue Tree Outdoor Living has been part of Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1983, founded in Norristown, operating out of Schwenksville since 2008. Our employees live in the communities we serve. Their kids go to local schools. Their neighbors are our clients.

Jeff Mattiola has focused the company's community involvement on youth, sponsoring sports teams, providing uniforms, and supporting local athletics across the region. The annual toy drive with Collegeville Bakery every Christmas is a team tradition. And there is a quieter kind of community involvement too: mentoring. Young people have shadowed Jeff to learn about the industry. He talks to them about career opportunities in outdoor living, an industry that most high schoolers never consider.

If you join Blue Tree, you are not just joining a company. You are joining a team that is embedded in the community it serves.

Common Questions

Blue Tree Outdoor Living's been a family-owned operation since 1983, and the team culture reflects that. Average employee tenure is 13 to 14 years, which says more than any benefits page can. People stay because the work is interesting (every project is custom), the crews are skilled, and the owners are involved day-to-day. There's a strong field-to-leadership growth path. Many of today's project managers and designers started with Blue Tree in entry-level crew roles.

Roles vary by season. Common categories include landscape and pool designers, project managers, pool construction crew (concrete, finishing, equipment), hardscape installers (paver crews, masonry), landscape installation crew, turf care technicians, service techs for ongoing maintenance, and office support (operations, accounting, customer experience). Current openings appear below this section with full descriptions. Send your resume even if your role isn't listed; Blue Tree Outdoor Living hires for fit when the right person shows up.

Blue Tree Outdoor Living's benefits roster varies by role, and the four-bucket structure below is honest about what each group receives. Available to all employees: Healthcare, Dental, and Vision coverage plus 401(k) retirement plan. Available to salary employees and forepersons: paid time off (vacation, sick, personal) and paid holidays. Sales positions: commission compensation in addition to base pay. Seasonal labor positions: year-round retention with seasonal pacing (typical off-season is January and February, eligible for unemployment benefits during that window). Specific benefit details and eligibility timelines are confirmed during the interview process; tenure plays a role in PTO accrual where applicable.

It depends on the role. Designer and project manager roles typically need relevant experience or a degree from a program like Penn State, Delaware Valley College, Penn College of Technology, or a similar landscape architecture or horticulture track. Crew positions and entry-level roles offer on-the-job training. Healthy Yards turf care roles benefit from a Penn State Extension turf certification, which Blue Tree Outdoor Living helps you earn if you're serious about the field. Send a resume.

Three structural differences. Blue Tree Outdoor Living runs Pools, Landscapes, Hardscapes, Healthy Yards, and Premier Outdoor Services in-house under one roof, with one designer leading every project. The team has a 13 to 14 year average employee tenure and includes 8 or more designers and sales professionals on staff. Pricing is transparent: named ranges, itemized proposals, and a fixed-scope quote, instead of the contractor pattern of low-bid-then-up-charge. Forty-three years of Southeastern PA experience sits underneath it.
