Space is getting scarcer. Newer homes are sometimes shoe-horned into a more confined lot, and even older homes may leave you feeling too close to your neighbors for comfort. To claim and beautify your space, consider a grouping of plants to screen views and create a sense of intimacy and privacy.

Today’s screens differ greatly from the hedges of old, which were usually evergreens of a single variety planted in a straight row and pruned into a square. Those weren’t always attractive and could take years to grow large enough to accomplish the goal.

To help you this spring, we can artfully situate a variety of trees, shrubs and large perennials as a screen along a property line or near an outdoor seating area. Using several types of plants lends movement and beauty, attracts wildlife, and offers a changing view of blooms, berries and leaf colors.

Staying Cool Outdoors With Shade Structures

The summer sun is fantastic, but it is definitely possible to get too much of a good thing. The right amount of shade allows you to maximize the amount of time you get to spend enjoying your outdoor living spaces.

Majestic trees such as oaks and maples are great for shade. The problem is that these trees take decades to reach maturity – not exactly a quick fix. That’s not going to take care of your problem right away. For a more immediate solution, consider a hardscape shade structure.

Introducing shade to your outdoor living area reduces the perceived temperature by 10-15 degrees.

A pergola can block a remarkable amount of sun and even more if you choose to grow ornamental vines on it. For a more robust option, a full roof over your patio provides cover from rain and also opens up the possibilities of adding lighting, fans and speakers to extend your outdoor enjoyment even further.
