Fence Design and Installation in Southeastern Pennsylvania

A fence does more than mark a boundary. Done right, it adds privacy, security, and structure that ties the whole property together. Blue Tree designs and installs fencing as part of your landscape, not as a bolt-on, so materials, grade, and plantings work together. For 43 years, our team has built fences that hold straight and true across Southeastern Pennsylvania's clay soil and freeze-thaw winters.

What Sets Blue Tree's Fencing Apart

Most fence companies set posts and leave. Blue Tree designs the fence into the property, then installs it to last. A Blue Tree designer looks at how the fence relates to grade, drainage, plantings, the pool, and the lines of the house, then specifies materials and a layout that fits. Posts are set below the frost line and packed for our freeze-thaw cycles, so the fence does not heave or lean after the first hard winter. Blue Tree has installed fencing across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties since 1983, handles township permits and property-line questions, and can soften the fence with planting from the same plan.

Our Fence Installation Process, Step by Step

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, one team manages your fence. Here is how it comes together.
1

Step 1: Free On-Site Consultation

A Blue Tree team member walks your property, confirms the fence line and how it relates to grade, drainage, plantings, and any pool, and talks through what the fence needs to do: privacy, security, code, or definition. We confirm property lines and the look you want. The visit is free with no same-day pressure. Timeline: 1 visit, about 60 minutes.
2

Step 2: Custom Design and 3D Renderings

Your designer specifies the fence style, height, and material, maps the run against the property, and where it matters, shows the fence in context with the rest of the landscape. You approve the layout and materials before anything is ordered. Timeline: 1 to 2 weeks.
3

Step 3: Materials, Proposal, and Permitting

Blue Tree sources the fence material, prices the project as one itemized proposal, and handles township permits and any setback or pool-code requirements. You see exactly what you are getting before you sign. Timeline: 1 to 3 weeks, varies by township.
4

Step 4: Professional Installation

Crews set posts below the frost line, pack and brace them for our freeze-thaw soil, and hang panels or rails straight and level across grade. Gates are hung to swing true and latch cleanly. Timeline: a few days to 1 week.
5

Step 5: Aftercare & Warranty

Blue Tree walks the finished fence with you, confirms gates and hardware, and reviews care and warranty terms in writing. Surrounding planting and bed work can be handled by the same team. Timeline: same day as completion.

Fence Styles for Every Property

The right fence depends on the job: privacy, security, pool code, or just defining a space. These are the fence types Southeastern PA homeowners ask Blue Tree for most.

Privacy Fencing

Solid board, board-on-board, and panel fencing that blocks sight lines and softens road noise.

Pool Safety Fencing

Code-compliant fencing that keeps a pool area secure without walling off the view, planned with the pool design.

Picket and Garden Fencing

Classic picket and decorative fencing that defines beds and front yards while keeping a property open.

Aluminum and Ornamental Fencing

Low-maintenance metal fencing for security and a clean, formal look that lasts for decades.

Post-and-Rail and Estate Fencing

Split-rail and estate fencing for larger properties, paddocks, and a relaxed, rural look.

Privacy Screening with Planting

Where a living screen fits better than a fence, evergreen hedgerows planned and planted by the same team.

Built for Southeastern Pennsylvania's Soil and Winters

A fence is only as good as its posts, and posts live or die by how they are set. Southeastern Pennsylvania's frost line runs 36 inches deep, so any post set shallower will heave and tilt through repeat freeze-thaw cycles in clay soil. Blue Tree sets wood and vinyl posts in concrete footings at or below that depth, with gravel drainage at the base to keep water from freezing around the footing and cracking the concrete. Pool-code fencing in SE PA must be 48 inches minimum height with self-latching gates that open away from the pool, specifications Blue Tree builds to on every in-ground pool project. Wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain-link each perform differently in our humidity and UV environment: pressure-treated pine at 0.40 pcf retention handles our moisture load, vinyl requires properly spaced post footings to avoid racking in high wind, and aluminum is the standard choice for pool areas where corrosion resistance matters more than cost savings. Most townships in Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties require a permit for fences above a certain height (typically 6 feet) with setbacks of 2 to 3 feet from the property line. HOA communities add their own material and color restrictions on top of township codes. Blue Tree has handled permits, setbacks, HOA documentation, and pool-code fencing requirements across all seven counties since 1983.

Common Questions

Fencing costs in southeastern PA range from $25 to $65 per linear foot installed, and total project costs typically run $2,000 to $18,000 depending on material, fence height, and linear footage. Aluminum ornamental fencing runs $35 to $65 per linear foot installed and is the most durable option for this climate. Wood privacy fence in cedar or pressure-treated pine runs $25 to $55 per linear foot and requires refinishing every 3 to 5 years to prevent weathering. Vinyl privacy fence runs $30 to $60 per linear foot and is low-maintenance, though it is more susceptible to warping under southeastern PA's summer heat extremes above 90 degrees F. Your free consultation with Blue Tree Outdoor Living includes a material comparison and itemized estimate so you can make a decision based on 10-year total cost, not just installation price.

Aluminum ornamental fencing is the most climate-durable choice for southeastern PA properties because it is unaffected by the freeze-thaw cycles that run from October through March with a 36-inch frost depth in this region. Aluminum does not rot, warp, or require refinishing. Cedar and pressure-treated wood are excellent choices for privacy fencing where aesthetics matter, but both require staining or sealing every 3 to 5 years. Left untreated, wood fence posts in the Conshohocken Loam and clay-heavy soils common in Montgomery and Bucks Counties absorb ground moisture aggressively, accelerating rot at the post base. Vinyl is low-maintenance but performs worst of the three in southeastern PA's temperature range: extreme summer heat can cause vinyl sections to expand and buckle, and the material becomes brittle in repeated sub-zero cold snaps that occur in northern Lehigh and Berks Counties.

Permit requirements for residential fences vary by township across the seven counties Blue Tree Outdoor Living serves, but the general rule is: fences over 6 feet in height require a building permit in most southeastern PA municipalities. In Montgomery County, townships like Whitpain, Lower Merion, and Upper Dublin all require permit applications for any new fence installation regardless of height, not just those over 6 feet. HOA approval is required before installation in virtually all planned developments across Blue Bell, Gwynedd Valley, and Horsham, and HOA setback and material requirements often are more restrictive than municipal codes. Blue Tree Outdoor Living handles permit research and application as part of the project scope. Allow 2 to 4 additional weeks for permit approval in municipalities with active review queues.

Worsham series soils, the seasonally wet clay found in low-lying areas throughout Montgomery and Bucks Counties, present two specific challenges for fence installations. First, saturated clay holds moisture against wood and concrete post bases year-round, accelerating decay at ground level and reducing post life by 5 to 10 years compared to well-drained installations. Second, fence lines installed across Worsham clay lots can impede natural surface drainage patterns if posts and gravel backfill are not engineered to maintain drainage flow. A fence that blocks a natural swale forces water around posts and can cause erosion or standing water on neighboring properties. Blue Tree Outdoor Living's installation crews assess drainage patterns before establishing post layout and select backfill materials and post treatment specifications appropriate for your specific soil type.

From initial consultation to a completed fence installation, most projects with Blue Tree Outdoor Living take 2 to 6 weeks without a permit requirement. Site measurement, material selection, and proposal typically happen within the first 1 to 2 weeks. Crew scheduling and material lead time add another 1 to 2 weeks. Installation itself for a typical 150 to 300 linear foot project takes 1 to 3 days. In municipalities that require building permits, including many Montgomery County townships, add 2 to 4 weeks for permit review before installation can begin. Scheduling in spring (April through May) and fall (September through October) is fastest because demand peaks in summer. For projects requiring HOA approval, allow an additional 2 to 4 weeks beyond the permit timeline, as HOA review boards typically meet monthly.

The single most common mistake in residential fence installation is assuming the fence line and assuming the property line are the same thing. Installing a fence even 6 inches over the property line can trigger a municipality or neighbor dispute that requires fence removal and reinstallation at full cost. Most southeastern PA municipalities, including the majority of townships in Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester Counties, require a current property survey or plat drawing before a fence permit is approved, and some require formal staking by a licensed surveyor. Blue Tree Outdoor Living requires confirmation of property boundaries before any fence layout begins. If no current survey exists, we walk you through the options for having one completed before the project starts, which protects both your investment and your property line from day one.
