Fall leaves look great on trees as they paint your yard with the colors of autumn. However, they lose most of that beauty when they fall on the ground. Even as you enjoy the early fall, it’s never too early to think about leaf removal.
Raking leaves into piles is a pretty straightforward process, but then what do you do with them? You can bag them and put them out for the trash, but filling up landfills with yard waste is less than ideal ecologically. Adding leaves to your compost seems like a good solution. The problem is that good compost is made up of a variety of organic materials. A yard’s worth of dry leaves is too much for your compost heap to deal with and will take up tons of space without yielding the results that you want.
Short of a curbside leaf removal service, dealing with leaves often requires some creativity. If your yard has only a small scattering of leaves, try mulching them with your mower. Crisp, dry leaves are easily shredded, especially when they are passed over more than once. Once these small bits of leaves are subject to moisture, they disintegrate easily and provide nutrients for your lawn.
If necessary, moderate amounts of leaves can be added to compost or bagged up and put out with the trash. If possible, though, it is best to pulverize leaves with your mower and return them to the ground. Of course, if none of these solutions works for you, contact us. We’ll be happy to help!
