Preparing Your Lawn for the Fall and Winter Season

Preparing Your Lawn for the Fall and Winter Season

If you’ve put in the time for a well-manicured lawn, you don’t want to lose all that hard work in the off-season. Caring for your lawn in the fall helps you prepare for a strong spring recovery and bloom. Now is the perfect time to prepare your lawn for the fall and winter season. Here are a few tips to ensure a healthy lawn into the latter part of the year while preparing it to flourish the following spring.

Aeration & Overseeding

The most ideal time to seed your lawn is in the fall. With the ground still warm thanks to the constant summer sun and more moderate day temperatures and cooler evening temperatures, the fall months allow for fast germination and established grass seed. Aeration and overseeding (seeding an existing lawn) yield the best results in the fall because nutrients, water and oxygen can reach deep into the turf through the aerated holes during the months of September through November, building stronger and deeper roots. This ultimately results in a thicker and greener lawn next spring.

So what is aeration? During the aeration process, a machine known as a core aerator pulls plugs of soil and thatch up from the lawn to break up compacted soil and create more room for air, water and fertilizer to reach the roots. This results in the expansion of the root system for thicker, healthier grass. Aeration also helps to break up thatch, which can prevent water, fertilizer and insect controls from reaching the soil if it gets too thick.

Fertilizing Your Turf

While grass will slow its growth in the fall months, its root system continues to flourish underground. To best help the process, you should fertilize your turf during this time. A fall fertilization schedule also provides the right nutrients for your grass to repair any damage caused by the summer sun, activity and drought conditions. This recovery process is vital for successful spring growth.
