Outdoor Kitchen Design and Construction in Southeastern Pennsylvania

An outdoor kitchen turns the patio from a place you pass through into the place everyone gathers. Blue Tree designs and builds outdoor kitchens that match the way you cook and entertain, built into the hardscape to last through our winters. For 43 years, our ICPI-certified crews have built outdoor living spaces across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

What Sets Blue Tree's Outdoor Kitchens Apart

An outdoor kitchen is part appliance, part masonry, and part design, and most companies are good at only one. Blue Tree designs the kitchen into the patio and the way you actually cook, then builds the structure in masonry and stone rated for the outdoors, with proper gas, electric, and drainage roughed in from the start. Counter heights, the work triangle, and storage are planned for real use, not just looks. Blue Tree builds with Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and natural stone, handles permits and utilities in-house, and has built across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties since 1983.

Our Outdoor Kitchen Process, Step by Step

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, one team designs and builds your kitchen. Here is how it comes together.
1

Step 1: Free On-Site Consultation

A Blue Tree designer walks your patio or planned space and talks through how you cook and host: grilling, pizza, a full prep kitchen, or a bar for guests. We confirm utilities, layout, and budget. The visit is free with no same-day pressure. Timeline: 1 visit, about 60 to 90 minutes.
2

Step 2: Custom Design and 3D Renderings

Your designer plans the kitchen layout, appliances, counters, and seating, then you review 3D renderings of the finished space and refine materials and appliances on screen before construction. Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks.
3

Step 3: Materials, Proposal, and Permitting

Blue Tree specifies appliances, masonry, and stone, prices the project as one itemized proposal, and handles township permits plus gas and electric requirements in-house. You approve the exact appliances and finishes before anything is ordered. Timeline: 3 to 6 weeks, varies by township.
4

Step 4: Professional Installation

Crews build the masonry structure on a proper base, rough in gas, electric, water, and drainage, set the counters and stone, and install and test the appliances. Everything is built to live outdoors. Timeline: 2 to 5 weeks, varies by scope.
5

Step 5: Aftercare & Warranty

Blue Tree tests every appliance and connection, walks you through operation, and reviews appliance and construction warranty terms in writing. Surrounding hardscape, landscape, and lighting can be finished by the same team. Timeline: a few days.

Built for Southeastern Pennsylvania's Seasons

An outdoor kitchen in Southeastern Pennsylvania has to handle four seasons, including freeze-thaw winters and humid summers that accelerate corrosion in any appliance or finish not rated for outdoor exposure. Blue Tree builds the structure in masonry and stone on a proper base, specifies appliances from commercial-grade outdoor lines, and roughs in gas, electric, and water so nothing has to be torn apart after the fact. For appliances, Blue Tree works with DCS, Napoleon, and Lynx grill and burner lines, which are built to handle extended outdoor exposure and cold-weather storage. Counter materials are selected for freeze-thaw durability: granite, porcelain tile, and outdoor-rated concrete countertops all perform well in our climate. Stainless cabinet doors and drawer systems are closed and covered through winter, and gas connections are disconnected at the shutoff rather than left pressurized through the freeze cycle. Built right, the kitchen runs from the first warm spring afternoon well into November. Blue Tree handles the Pennsylvania UCC permit for the gas line extension and any electrical rough-in, and coordinates with licensed trades for those inspections, across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties, where it has built since 1983.

Common Questions

A basic grill station on a concrete masonry unit (CMU) base runs $8,000 to $15,000 installed. A full outdoor kitchen with counter space, storage, a sink, and a refrigerator runs $20,000 to $65,000. A premium outdoor living setup that includes a pergola overhead structure, built-in lighting, and a full appliance package can reach $40,000 to $90,000. Southeastern PA projects typically add $1,500 to $4,000 in permit fees because outdoor kitchens with gas lines require building, gas, and electrical permits in most Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester County townships. The free consultation includes a site visit, a utility locating discussion, and a budget range scoped to your specific lot.

Concrete masonry unit (CMU) block construction is the most durable structural base for outdoor kitchens in southeastern Pennsylvania. CMU resists freeze-thaw cycling because the block itself is non-porous and mass-manufactured to withstand compressive loads. Pre-fabricated aluminum frame systems are faster to assemble and cost 20 to 30 percent less, but they flex more than CMU under heavy countertop loads and are more susceptible to mortar joint cracking at the stone veneer over multiple freeze-thaw cycles. Natural stone adds premium character to any outdoor kitchen but requires a licensed mason and deeper footings to keep the mass stable. For any outdoor kitchen that will be used year-round in southeastern PA, CMU block is the standard Blue Tree recommends. It is what handles 36-inch frost depth without movement.

Most townships in Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester Counties require a building permit for any permanent outdoor structure, plus a separate gas permit if a natural gas or propane line is involved, and an electrical permit if the kitchen includes lighting, refrigeration, or a GFCI outlet. Some townships also require zoning approval depending on setback distances from lot lines or structures. Blue Tree coordinates all permit applications as part of every outdoor kitchen project. This matters because a kitchen built without permits can complicate homeowner's insurance claims and create problems at the point of sale. The permit process typically adds 3 to 5 weeks to a project timeline but is non-negotiable in virtually every municipality we serve across all 7 counties.

Gas line installation for an outdoor kitchen must be performed by a PA-licensed plumber under a pulled permit, per PA Act 12 Underground Utility Protection requirements. The standard run is direct-bury black iron pipe from the meter to the kitchen island, sized to the BTU demand of all planned appliances. Most high-output grill burners draw 60,000 to 100,000 BTU, and undersized line diameter is a common installation error that reduces burner performance at peak load. Electronic ignition systems are required by most southeastern PA townships; open-flame piezo ignition is no longer accepted. Blue Tree works with licensed plumbing subcontractors on all gas line work. We never allow this scope to be handled by general laborers, because gas code violations create liability and real safety risk.

The two most durable countertop options for southeastern Pennsylvania outdoor kitchens are 60mm concrete pavers and porcelain pavers with a freeze-thaw rating. Both can handle the temperature range from negative 10 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit that southeastern PA produces. Standard clay brick veneers are the most common mistake in outdoor kitchen design. Brick is porous, absorbs water, and spalls dramatically after the first hard winter if not rated for severe weather exposure. The same problem applies to most standard ceramic tiles, which are not rated for outdoor freeze-thaw use. For overhead timber framing, Blue Tree uses Ipe or Teak with stainless steel fasteners only, because standard galvanized fasteners corrode in southeastern PA humidity within 3 to 5 years and cause structural staining and wood splitting.

Blue Tree Outdoor Living has built outdoor living spaces in southeastern Pennsylvania for 43 years, and the single most common cause of a failed outdoor kitchen project is coordination breakdown between separate contractors. When a hardscape crew, a plumber, an electrician, and a stone mason are all operating under separate contracts, nobody owns the drainage plan or the permit sequence. Blue Tree manages all trade coordination under one contract with one project manager. Our 13 to 14 year average employee tenure means the crew foreman who set the CMU base has likely done it 50 or more times in this region. Chad Ochnich is ICPI certified and oversees every hardscape component of outdoor kitchen projects personally. You have one point of contact from design through the final walkthrough and warranty period.
