Paver Patio Design and Installation in Southeastern Pennsylvania

A paver patio is where the backyard actually happens: meals, gatherings, quiet mornings with coffee. Blue Tree designs and installs paver patios built on a proper base, so they stay flat and beautiful for decades instead of heaving after a few winters. For 43 years, our ICPI-certified crews have laid patios across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

What Sets Blue Tree's Paver Patios Apart

The difference between a patio that lasts and one that fails is everything you cannot see. Blue Tree excavates to the right depth, builds a properly compacted base, sets drainage, and lays pavers to ICPI standards with a locked edge restraint. A patio is also designed, not just sized, so it fits the house, the grade, and how you entertain. Blue Tree builds with Belgard and Techo-Bloc pavers, handles permits and impervious-surface limits in-house, and has laid patios across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties since 1983.

Our Paver Patio Process, Step by Step

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, one team designs and builds your patio. Here is how it comes together.
1

Step 1: Free On-Site Consultation

A Blue Tree designer walks your property, reads grade, drainage, and access, and talks through how you want to use the patio: dining, lounging, a fire feature, or all three. We discuss materials and budget. The visit is free with no same-day pressure. Timeline: 1 visit, about 60 minutes.
2

Step 2: Custom Design and 3D Renderings

Your designer shapes the patio to the house and yard, then you review 3D renderings of the finished space and refine size, paver style, and borders on screen before excavation. Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks.
3

Step 3: Materials, Proposal, and Permitting

Blue Tree specifies Belgard or Techo-Bloc pavers, prices the patio as one itemized proposal, and handles township permits and impervious-surface calculations in-house. You approve the exact pavers and colors before anything is ordered. Timeline: 2 to 6 weeks, varies by township.
4

Step 4: Professional Installation

Crews excavate to depth, build and compact the base in lifts, set drainage and edge restraint, and lay the pavers to ICPI standards. The base is where a patio is won or lost. Timeline: 1 to 3 weeks, varies by size.
5

Step 5: Aftercare & Warranty

Blue Tree compacts and sands the joints, cleans the surface, and can restore surrounding landscape and lighting with the same team. You leave with warranty terms in writing, including the Belgard or Techo-Bloc manufacturer warranty. Timeline: a few days.

Built for Southeastern Pennsylvania's Freeze-Thaw Winters

A paver patio in Southeastern Pennsylvania has to survive dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every winter, and clay-heavy soil that swells and shifts with moisture. Patios that heave, sink, or crack almost always failed at the base. Blue Tree excavates to the depth this climate requires, typically 10 to 12 inches for a standard patio and up to 16 inches at the perimeter, then compacts crushed stone in lifts to AASHTO 57 or 2A modified grading before setting a concrete sand bedding layer per ICPI standards. That base is what allows a patio to stay flat for decades through our winters. For paver selection, Blue Tree works primarily with Belgard and Techo-Bloc, both rated to ASTM C936 freeze-thaw requirements. Belgard Arbel, Aquia IV, and Brussels Dimensional are common choices for properties in Montgomery and Chester Counties where the goal is a natural stone character with consistent thickness. Techo-Bloc Borealis and Oro Max are frequent selections for larger multi-level areas and pool surrounds. Chad Ochnich's ICPI-certified hardscape team handles impervious-surface calculations, municipality and township permit submissions, and HOA documentation across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties, where the team has built since 1983.

Common Questions

A 400 square foot paver patio in Belgard Mega Arbel or Plano ranges from $12,000 to $28,000 installed. A 600 square foot patio in the same materials runs $18,000 to $40,000. Material cost accounts for roughly 40 percent of the total, with Belgard premium paver lines priced at $8 to $15 per square foot for material only. The remaining cost covers excavation, an 8-inch compacted gravel base, 1-inch bedding sand, edge restraints, polymeric sand, and labor. Southeastern PA projects also carry permit fees ($200 to $800 in most townships) and occasionally soil remediation costs when Worsham series clay requires added drainage measures. The free consultation includes a site visit, a square footage measurement, and a written estimate so you know the full number before signing anything.

ASTM C936 covers structural concrete paving stones and validates compressive strength and freeze-thaw durability. ASTM C1491 covers permeable concrete pavers used in stormwater management applications. ASTM C1782 covers concrete patio slabs. In southeastern Pennsylvania, freeze-thaw cycling from October through March creates repeated expansion and contraction stress on any paved surface. Pavers that do not meet ASTM C936 can absorb water, freeze, and spall within two to three winters. Every Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and Unilock product Blue Tree specifies meets or exceeds ASTM C936, which is why manufacturer warranties hold up in this climate. When comparing bids, ask every contractor which ASTM standard their specified material meets. If they cannot answer, that is a red flag.

Blue Tree's standard paver patio installation in southeastern Pennsylvania uses an 8-inch compacted Class 2 aggregate base, a 1-inch screeded bedding sand layer, and ASTM-compliant polymeric sand for joint filling. Edge restraints are anchored into undisturbed soil every 24 inches using 12-inch spikes in sandy loam soils or longer driven spikes in clay soils. Clay soils expand and contract with moisture changes, which makes anchoring critical. A spike-only edge restraint on Conshohocken Loam or Worsham clay can pull away from the paver field within a few seasons, causing the edge rows to fan out. On driveways or areas with potential vehicular access, edge restraints are supplemented with buried concrete deadman anchors for added stability. Doing this correctly at the start prevents expensive edge repairs later.

Herringbone laid at 45 degrees is the most structurally stable pattern and is the right choice for any patio where vehicles might access, such as a pad near a detached garage or a driveway apron. The interlocking geometry of 45-degree herringbone distributes loads across a larger number of joints, reducing individual unit stress. Running bond is appropriate for residential garden patios and offers a clean, modern look. Basketweave is a traditional pattern well suited to colonial-style homes common in the Blue Bell, Gwynedd Valley, and Lansdale areas of Montgomery County. Patterns do not affect material cost, but 45-degree cuts at borders add 5 to 10 percent to labor time. The pattern choice should follow both aesthetics and how the space will be used.

Polymeric sand is a joint-filling compound that contains fine sand blended with polymer binders. Once activated with water, it hardens to resist ant infiltration, weed germination, and joint erosion. Blue Tree specifies ASTM-compliant polymeric sand rated to negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it remains flexible rather than cracking during southeastern PA freeze-thaw cycles. Application technique matters. The surface must be completely dry before sweeping polymeric sand into joints, and any excess must be blown off the paver face before activation. Polymeric sand left on a wet surface or activated with standing water can stain the paver face permanently. Reapplication is typically needed every 7 to 10 years as normal joint settling occurs, which is far less expensive than a full patio rebuild.

Mortar-set flagstone fails on a clay base in southeastern Pennsylvania because clay expands and contracts with seasonal moisture changes while mortar is rigid and brittle. The first winter typically produces hairline cracks at mortar joints. By the third or fourth year, joints open wide enough to admit water, which then freezes and forces flagstone units apart. Entire sections can lift, shift, or crack. The only freeze-thaw tolerant paving system for clay-based southeastern PA soils is dry-set interlocking pavers or dry-laid flagstone on a properly compacted gravel base. This allows each unit to move independently with soil movement rather than transferring stress to adjacent units through a rigid bond. Blue Tree has rebuilt multiple mortar-set patios installed by other contractors in Montgomery and Chester Counties for exactly this reason.
