Why Cedars Homeowners Have Trusted Blue Tree Since 1983

Our story started in 1983, and our headquarters is minutes from Cedars, on Skippack Pike in Schwenksville. We have designed and built across the Cedars area and central Montgomery County for more than four decades. What began as a small residential landscape operation has grown into a full-service design-build firm with 70 to 90 team members, six degree-holding designers with a combined 100-plus years of experience, and a production calendar that spans pools, patios, landscapes, turf care, and year-round maintenance.
Our headquarters sits at 4494 Skippack Pike, just minutes from Cedars. We do not commute from an hour away to work on your property. We file permits with the township, we know the clay soils and rolling terrain of the area, and we understand exactly what it takes to build well on properties around Cedars.
What matters most to us is the relationship. We are building pools and patios for the children of clients we worked with 25 years ago. Our designers develop friendships with homeowners that last long after the project is complete. As Jeff, our founder, was told early on: "All you have in life is your reputation." That advice has guided every decision we have made for more than four decades, and it is why homeowners around Cedars continue to trust Blue Tree with their most important outdoor projects.

Custom Pool Construction

Blue Tree Outdoor Living is one of the only full-service design-build firms serving the Cedars area that handles custom pool construction in-house, from design and permitting through excavation, plumbing, plaster, and decking. We have been building inground pools for 15 years using premium Jandy equipment, and our approach is different: we do not just build the pool and leave. We design the entire backyard environment, including the pool, patio, landscaping, lighting, and drainage, as one integrated project. That is what turnkey means at Blue Tree.

Landscape Design & Installation

Our landscape design and installation services are led by degree-holding designers who create custom plans using CAD software and 3D renderings. We source approximately 90 percent of our plant material from local growers, design for four-season interest and long-term performance, and back every planting with a one-year warranty. Whether you need a foundation planting refresh, a native garden installation, or a complete property transformation, our design team builds the plan around your vision, lifestyle, and budget.

Designed for the Cedars Area's Climate, Soil, and Character

Cedars is a small community in Worcester Township, Montgomery County, characterized by a mix of open farmland, horse properties, and residential developments along Skippack Pike and nearby rural roads. Lot sizes in this part of Worcester tend to be generous by Montgomery County standards, and many properties remain on well and septic systems. Pool installations require a minimum 10-foot setback from septic components, and chemical storage must maintain appropriate clearance from the well head. Open, elevated terrain across much of the Cedars area means clay loam soils drain moderately well on higher ground but collect water in the low spots between lots. Wind exposure is a real design factor on these open properties: hardscape edges that face prevailing westerly winds need extra base depth to resist frost heave from the windward side, and plant selections for the exposed perimeter prioritize species that handle winter desiccation and wind burn. Worcester Township administers its own permits, with standard review requirements for pools, retaining walls, and grading projects. Blue Tree has worked in Cedars and Worcester Township since 1983.
Soil around Cedars is predominantly clay, with rockier ground on the higher terrain. Clay holds moisture and creates drainage challenges, while rock complicates excavation for pools and footings. Both have to be addressed during installation, not discovered after the fact. Soil amendment is part of nearly every planting project we complete here, and proper drainage design is built into every hardscape and pool plan.
We also design around realities homeowners around Cedars know: deer pressure is significant on the wooded and semi-rural lots, freeze-thaw cycles heave shallow-rooted plants and shift improperly based pavers, and the township carries its own permitting requirements for pools, structures, impervious surfaces, and stormwater management. Based minutes away on Skippack Pike in Schwenksville, we have filed those permits and solved those drainage problems all over central Montgomery County. That local knowledge is something no out-of-town contractor can match.

Common Questions

Blue Tree Outdoor Living serves Cedars homeowners with the full range of outdoor services, including custom pool design and construction, natural stone and paver hardscape, landscape design and installation, Healthy Yards lawn and turf programs, irrigation, outdoor lighting, and Premier Outdoor Services for ongoing property care. Cedars is an unincorporated community within Worcester and Skippack Townships, and it sits just minutes from our design center at 4494 Skippack Pike, Schwenksville. The large-lot estate character of Cedars properties puts them squarely in the category of work Blue Tree is built for: complex, acreage-scale outdoor projects that require real crew capacity and long-term planning. Request a Free Consultation to discuss your property.

Cedars properties are defined by scale. Two to five acre lots with equestrian facilities, mature tree lines, and Skippack Creek tributary drainage require a different approach than a typical suburban yard. Bottomland areas along the creek corridor sit on Worsham series clay, seasonally wet and slow-draining well into May. Upland sections transition to Cecil sandy loam with adequate drainage but thin topsoil on slopes. Large old trees create significant root zones that complicate hardscape base installation and irrigation routing. Deer pressure in this rural transition zone is substantial and consistent. The limited number of full-service landscape and hardscape firms willing to operate at this scale means Cedars homeowners often wait a long time for work that Blue Tree can schedule with our full crew capacity.

Cedars addresses fall within Worcester Township and Skippack Township depending on the specific parcel. Both townships require building permits for in-ground pools, fences, decks, and permanent structures. Worcester Township has a zoning overlay for conservation and agricultural parcels that may require additional review depending on lot size and use. Skippack Township permit applications require site plans with setback dimensions and fencing plans for pool installations. Properties near Skippack Creek tributary channels may also require PA DEP Chapter 105 review for any work within floodplain or regulated wetland buffers. Blue Tree verifies the correct permitting jurisdiction for every Cedars project at the outset and manages all applications on your behalf.

Cedars properties in USDA zone 7a have real planting latitude for large-scale naturalistic landscapes. On the well-drained Cecil sandy loam uplands, meadow plantings of native switchgrass, big bluestem, ironweed, and goldenrod establish quickly and provide outstanding wildlife habitat while cutting maintenance dramatically versus turf. For riparian areas near the Skippack Creek tributary, native buttonbush, swamp white oak, and Joe Pye weed stabilize banks and manage seasonal flooding. Screen plantings using American holly, native viburnum species, and white pine establish faster on these large parcels than on smaller suburban lots because there is room for proper spacing. Deer management is essential; our Healthy Yards programs include perimeter deer-resistant plant specification and repellent treatment schedules.

Blue Tree Outdoor Living has been in business for 43 years since founding in Norristown in 1983, and our Skippack Pike design center is literally minutes from the Cedars community. Blue Tree's roots in Worcester and Skippack Townships mean our team has worked on some of the largest estate properties in the Cedars area over many years. There are very few full-service outdoor living firms that operate at the scale of two to five acre equestrian and estate properties. Blue Tree does. With 70 to 90 employees during peak season, we have the crew capacity to take on large-acreage Cedars projects and execute them on a reasonable schedule.

Cedars properties require a firm with the staffing, equipment, and horticultural knowledge to operate at estate scale. Blue Tree's team has 13 to 14 year average employee tenure, meaning the people leading your project have managed large complex properties before and will not be learning on yours. Chad Ochnich's ICPI certification covers the structural hardscape demands of long driveways, large patio fields, and pool surrounds on expansive lots. Our pool team brings 15 years of construction experience on natural-edge and custom pool designs suited to rural character. We source materials from Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and Unilock and work with Penn State Cooperative Extension resources for guidance on Cedars' specific soil and drainage conditions.
