Hardscape Design in Southeastern Pennsylvania

Patios, walls, walkways, and outdoor kitchens are the bones of a backyard. Get the design right and everything else falls into place. Blue Tree designs hardscapes that fit the property, the house, and the way you live outside, then builds them to last generations. For 43 years, our ICPI-certified crews have shaped outdoor spaces across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

What Sets Blue Tree's Hardscape Design Apart

Most contractors price a patio by the square foot and start digging. Blue Tree designs the hardscape first, as part of the whole property. A designer studies grade, drainage, sun, and how the spaces connect, then plans patios, walls, walkways, and features so materials, levels, and water all work together. The work is built on a proper base, with ICPI-certified installation that holds flat and true through our freeze-thaw winters. Blue Tree has designed and built hardscapes across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties since 1983, handles permitting in-house, and partners with Belgard and Techo-Bloc for premium materials.

Our Hardscape Design and Build Process, Step by Step

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, one team designs and builds your hardscape. Here is how it comes together.
1

Step 1: Free On-Site Consultation

A Blue Tree designer walks your property and reads grade, drainage, sun, access, and how the hardscape should connect the house and yard. Then we talk through how you want to use the space, your materials, and budget. The visit is free with no same-day pressure. Timeline: 1 visit, about 60 to 90 minutes.
2

Step 2: Custom Design and 3D Renderings

Your designer plans the patio, walls, walkways, and features as one layout, then you review 3D renderings of the finished space with your house in frame and refine materials and shape on screen. Revisions happen here, before excavation. Timeline: 2 to 4 weeks.
3

Step 3: Materials, Proposal, and Permitting

Blue Tree specifies Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and natural stone materials, prices the project as one itemized proposal, and handles township permits and impervious-surface calculations in-house. You see where every dollar goes before you sign. Timeline: 2 to 6 weeks, varies by township.
4

Step 4: Professional Installation

Crews excavate, build a proper compacted base, set drainage, and lay pavers or stone to ICPI standards, then build walls, steps, and features. A solid base is what keeps the hardscape flat through freeze-thaw. Timeline: 2 to 6 weeks, varies by scope.
5

Step 5: Aftercare & Warranty

Blue Tree cleans up, can restore the surrounding landscape and lighting with the same team, and walks the finished hardscape with you. You leave with warranty terms in writing, including the manufacturer warranties on Belgard and Techo-Bloc products. Timeline: a few days.

What a Blue Tree Hardscape Plan Includes

A hardscape plan is more than a patio. Every Blue Tree design coordinates these elements so the finished space works as one, not a set of disconnected projects.

Built for Southeastern Pennsylvania's Soil and Freeze-Thaw

Hardscape fails from the bottom up. Southeastern Pennsylvania's clay-heavy soil holds water, and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter heave anything built on a weak base. Blue Tree builds on a properly excavated, compacted base with real drainage, and installs to ICPI standards so patios and walls stay flat and true for decades. Material selection for this climate starts with what survives it: concrete pavers in Belgard and Techo-Bloc product lines rated to ASTM C936 freeze-thaw standards, natural bluestone and fieldstone for a traditional Pennsylvania character, and travertine for areas that won't be exposed to road salt or sidewalk deicers. Concrete pavers hold up well in high-traffic zones and are easier to repair than poured concrete, which tends to crack along expansion joints in our freeze-thaw cycles. For aesthetics, the architectural styles common across Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks Counties, colonial, Federal, farmhouse, and transitional, all call for materials with warmth rather than a modern grey palette, and Blue Tree's design approach reflects that regional context. Township impervious-surface rules can limit hardscape area, and Blue Tree handles those calculations and permits across all seven counties where it has built since 1983.

Common Questions

A standalone design-only engagement runs $800 to $2,500, but Blue Tree almost always includes design as part of a full project contract, which typically ranges from $8,000 for a basic entry walkway to $75,000 or more for a complete patio, kitchen, and retaining wall system. The free consultation covers a site visit, a drainage and grade assessment, a discussion of material options, and a ballpark budget range before you commit to anything. In southeastern Pennsylvania, clay-heavy soils and 36-inch frost depth add base preparation costs that simpler warm-climate estimates overlook. We will tell you that upfront so there are no surprises at the proposal stage.

From signed contract to final walkthrough, most residential hardscape projects in Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties take 6 to 14 weeks total. Weeks 1 through 2 cover a site survey, scaled drawing, drainage plan, and material selection. Weeks 3 through 5 cover permit coordination with your township (required for most structural hardscape in southeastern PA). Weeks 6 through 10 cover demolition, base preparation, installation, and grading. Final cleanup and a walkthrough happen in the last week. Spring and fall are peak scheduling seasons in southeastern PA; plan to book 8 to 12 weeks ahead if you want a June or September start date. Your main role is reviewing the design drawing, signing off on materials, and being available for the township permit inspection.

ICPI stands for the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, the industry body that sets technical standards for paver base preparation, drainage engineering, and freeze-thaw tolerant installation. Chad Ochnich, Blue Tree's co-owner, holds ICPI certification, which means his base specifications are grounded in verified engineering standards rather than crew habit. In southeastern Pennsylvania, where freeze-thaw cycles run from October through March and frost penetrates 36 inches into the ground, an improperly designed base causes heave, cracking, and joint separation. ICPI standards call for a minimum 8-inch compacted Class 2 aggregate base plus 1-inch bedding sand in this region, compared to only 4 inches in frost-free climates. That extra base depth is what separates a patio that lasts 30 years from one that needs a rebuild in five.

Southeastern Pennsylvania's 36-inch frost depth means moisture in the soil freezes and expands from mid-December through early March, lifting anything built on top of it. Warm-climate contractors use a 4-inch gravel base because they face little to no frost heave. Blue Tree's standard for this region is an 8-inch compacted Class 2 aggregate base plus 1 inch of bedding sand, engineered to flex below the frost line rather than crack under it. Soil type compounds the challenge. Worsham series clay soils, common in low-lying areas of Montgomery and Chester Counties, retain water and expand dramatically when wet. Conshohocken Loam and Cecil sandy loam drain better but still require proper base depth. A drainage assessment before design is not optional in southeastern PA; it is the foundation of every project we build.

Clay-heavy soils in our region, particularly the Worsham series found in low-lying areas across Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware Counties, do not drain freely. Without a designed drainage system, even a well-built patio becomes a standing-water problem every spring. Blue Tree's standard approach on clay sites is a minimum positive slope of 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house, combined with perforated pipe collection at low points and a discharge line to daylight or a dry well. On sites where discharge to daylight is not possible, we engineer a French drain system with geotextile-wrapped aggregate. Skipping this step to reduce upfront cost is the most common mistake homeowners make, and repairing a drainage problem after installation typically costs 40 to 60 percent more than building it correctly the first time.

Blue Tree has been building hardscapes in southeastern Pennsylvania for 43 years, with an average employee tenure of 13 to 14 years. That means the crew members who install your project have done it in every soil type and weather condition this region produces. Chad Ochnich is ICPI certified and has been co-owner of Blue Tree since 1995, bringing engineering discipline to every base specification. Most competing contractors in the area lack ICPI credentials and use base depths appropriate for Philadelphia's climate rather than for the freeze-thaw reality of inland Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks Counties. Blue Tree also coordinates permit applications, utility marking via PA 811, and drainage engineering as part of every project, so you are working with one team from design through the final walkthrough, not managing multiple subcontractors yourself.
