Hardscape Design in Southeastern Pennsylvania

Patios, walls, walkways, and outdoor kitchens are the bones of a backyard. Get the design right and everything else falls into place. Blue Tree designs hardscapes that fit the property, the house, and the way you live outside, then builds them to last generations. For 43 years, our ICPI-certified crews have shaped outdoor spaces across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

What Sets Blue Tree's Hardscape Design Apart

Blue Tree designs the hardscape as part of the whole property. A designer studies grade, drainage, access, existing structures, and how the spaces connect, then plans patios, walls, walkways, and features as one system. The ICPI-certified hardscape team confirms the installation specification and applicable municipal reviews before construction. Blue Tree has designed and built hardscapes across Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties since 1983. Written by Chad Ochnich, Blue Tree's co-owner and ICPI-certified hardscape lead, and reviewed by Justin Ryen, Production Manager and ICPI-certified hardscape installer.

Our Hardscape Design and Build Process, Step by Step

From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, one team designs and builds your hardscape. Here is how it comes together.
1

Step 1: Free On-Site Consultation

A Blue Tree designer walks your property and reads grade, drainage, sun, access, and how the hardscape should connect the house and yard. Then we talk through how you want to use the space, your materials, and budget. The visit is free with no same-day pressure. Timing: scheduled with the assigned designer.
2

Step 2: Custom Design and 3D Renderings

Your designer plans the patio, walls, walkways, and features as one layout, then you review 3D renderings of the finished space with your house in frame and refine materials and shape on screen. Revisions happen here, before excavation. Timing: confirmed after the site visit and depends on design scope and revisions.
3

Step 3: Materials, Proposal, and Permitting

Blue Tree specifies the approved materials and features, prepares the project proposal, and coordinates applicable permit, utility, HOA, and engineering reviews. You see the plan, scope, and pricing before construction. Scheduling is confirmed after the site and review path are known.
4

Step 4: Professional Installation

Crews excavate, build a proper compacted base, set drainage, and lay pavers or stone to ICPI standards, then build walls, steps, and features. A solid base is what keeps the hardscape flat through freeze-thaw. Timing: confirmed before construction and depends on the approved scope, site conditions, material availability, and weather.
5

Step 5: Aftercare & Warranty

Blue Tree cleans up, can restore the surrounding landscape and lighting with the same team, and walks the finished hardscape with you. You leave with warranty terms in writing, including the manufacturer warranties on Belgard and Techo-Bloc products. Timing: scheduled at project completion.

What a Blue Tree Hardscape Plan Includes

A hardscape plan is more than a patio. Every Blue Tree design coordinates these elements so the finished space works as one, not a set of disconnected projects.

Patios and Sitting Areas

Paver and natural stone patios sized and shaped for how you actually entertain and relax.

Walls and Built-In Seating

Retaining and seat walls that handle grade, define space, and add built-in seating.

Walkways and Steps

Paths and steps that connect the house, patio, and yard with safe, even footing.

Outdoor Kitchens and Fire

Kitchens, fire pits, and fireplaces built into the design as destinations, not afterthoughts.

Grading and Drainage

A plan to move water away from the house and hardscape, the difference between a patio that lasts and one that heaves.

Built for Southeastern Pennsylvania's Soil and Freeze-Thaw

Hardscape performance starts below the finished surface. Blue Tree evaluates soil, drainage, slope, load, access, and freeze-thaw exposure before specifying excavation, aggregate, bedding, jointing, edge restraint, and water management for the selected system. Material selection balances appearance, maintenance, traffic, exposure, manufacturer guidance, and budget. Concrete pavers and natural stone can both perform well when the material and installation details match the property. Impervious-surface, grading, stormwater, retaining-wall, and permit requirements vary by municipality and scope. Blue Tree confirms the applicable requirements with the local authority and coordinates any needed engineering before construction.

Common Questions

Blue Tree's 2026 planning range is $15,000 to $100,000 or more for hardscape projects. Design is coordinated with the installation scope; a separate design-only fee may apply when a homeowner wants plans without construction. The free consultation covers goals, site conditions, priorities, budget, and the next design step. Final pricing follows the approved site-specific scope.

The process starts with a site evaluation, priorities, budget, and scope. Blue Tree then develops the layout, drainage approach, material plan, and any required application documents before construction. Timing depends on project complexity, site access, material lead times, weather, and municipal review. The team confirms the schedule after those factors are known.

ICPI training covers the planning and installation fundamentals behind interlocking concrete pavement, including base preparation, drainage, edge restraint, jointing, and material handling. Blue Tree has ICPI-certified hardscape professionals on staff, and the project specification is based on the selected system and the property's soil, slope, drainage, load, and intended use.

Southeastern Pennsylvania's freeze-thaw cycles make drainage, base preparation, and material selection important. Base design varies with soil, slope, load, access, water movement, material, and applicable requirements. Blue Tree evaluates those conditions during design and confirms the installation specification for the property.

Blue Tree evaluates grade, soil, roof runoff, existing drains, low points, and the intended hardscape before selecting a drainage approach. Slope, collection, conveyance, and discharge details are designed for the property and applicable local requirements rather than applied as one universal specification.

Blue Tree has served Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1983, and its hardscape team includes ICPI-certified professionals led by Chad Ochnich. A 13 to 14 year average employee tenure supports continuity from design through installation and follow-up. The same team coordinates site planning, materials, drainage, utilities, and applicable reviews around one approved scope.
