Why Gwynedd Valley Homeowners Have Trusted Blue Tree Since 1983

Our story started in 1983, and our headquarters is nearby in Skippack. We have designed and built across Gwynedd Valley and Lower Gwynedd Township for more than four decades. What began as a small residential landscape operation has grown into a full-service design-build firm with 70 to 90 team members, six degree-holding designers with a combined 100-plus years of experience, and a production calendar that spans pools, patios, landscapes, turf care, and year-round maintenance.
Our headquarters sits at 4494 Skippack Pike, a short drive from Gwynedd Valley. We do not commute from an hour away to work on your property. We file permits with Lower Gwynedd Township, we know the clay soils and the wooded, Wissahickon-fed terrain of the area, and we understand what it takes to build well on Gwynedd Valley's established estate properties.
What matters most to us is the relationship. We are building pools and patios for the children of clients we worked with 25 years ago. Our designers develop friendships with homeowners that last long after the project is complete. As Jeff, our founder, was told early on: "All you have in life is your reputation." That advice has guided every decision we have made for more than four decades, and it is why Gwynedd Valley homeowners continue to trust Blue Tree with their most important outdoor projects.

Designed for Gwynedd Valley's Climate, Soil, and Character

Gwynedd Valley is a small community within Lower Gwynedd Township, one of central Montgomery County's most established and wooded municipalities. Mature oak and tulip poplar canopy creates full to partial shade conditions across many lots, which means design for shade-adapted plant palettes and increased difficulty establishing turf grass in areas with dense overhead cover. Lower Gwynedd Township administers its own permits, with zoning review for setback compliance and independent building permits for pools and structural hardscape. The township also enforces its own stormwater management requirements for grading projects, and pool and patio drainage must route to an approved outlet rather than to a street or neighboring property. Clay-heavy Wissahickon and Penn series soils across the township require full AASHTO base construction under all hardscape, and the area's mature root systems from established trees complicate pool excavation on lots where significant trees are near the excavation footprint. Blue Tree plans around existing specimen trees as a default, not an afterthought. The company has served Gwynedd Valley and Lower Gwynedd Township since 1983.
Soil around Gwynedd Valley is predominantly clay under decades of mature canopy, with the Wissahickon Creek watershed shaping drainage across much of the area. Clay holds moisture and established roots add complexity, so drainage has to be addressed during installation, not discovered after the fact. Soil amendment is part of nearly every planting project we complete here, and proper drainage design is built into every hardscape and pool plan.
We also design around realities Gwynedd Valley homeowners know: deer pressure is heavy on the wooded estate lots, freeze-thaw cycles heave shallow-rooted plants and shift improperly based pavers, and Lower Gwynedd Township enforces its own permitting and stormwater requirements, with many projects being renovations of mature, established landscapes. Based nearby in Skippack, we have filed those permits and solved those drainage problems on properties throughout Gwynedd Valley. That local knowledge is something no out-of-town contractor can match.

Gwynedd Valley properties span a range of ages and conditions that create different challenges depending on the block. Older 1960s and 1970s homes often have established root systems from mature oaks and maples that complicate hardscape base preparation and irrigation trenching. Clay loam soils throughout Lower Gwynedd drain slowly in spring, which means poorly timed installation can compact subgrade and cause paver settling within a few seasons. Newer post-2000 developments typically have thinner topsoil over compacted fill. HOA restrictions in several Gwynedd Valley communities govern fencing styles, plant heights, and materials. Spotted Lanternfly is an active concern throughout Lower Gwynedd Township and is part of our standard Healthy Yards monitoring protocol.

Yes. Gwynedd Valley is in Lower Gwynedd Township, and the township issues building permits for in-ground pools, fences, decks, permanent sheds, and structures. Pool permits require a site plan showing setbacks from property lines and buildings, a pool barrier fencing plan meeting PA code, and electrical specifications. Stormwater management plans may be required for larger patio or driveway projects depending on impervious surface calculations. Processing typically runs four to eight weeks. Many Gwynedd Valley developments also have HOA architectural review requirements that run parallel to the township permit process. Blue Tree handles the permit applications for all projects we design and build, coordinating with Lower Gwynedd Township directly.

Gwynedd Valley's USDA zone 7a climate supports a broad planting palette. On the clay loam soils common throughout Lower Gwynedd, moisture-tolerant selections like native clethra, itea, and sweet bay magnolia perform well in lower areas. Full-sun borders do well with native switchgrass, Karl Foerster grass, and rudbeckia. Mature tree canopy in older Gwynedd Valley neighborhoods creates significant shade; astilbe, ferns, and hostas are reliable workhorses in those conditions. Boxwood is under increasing disease pressure across the region and we recommend native holly alternatives for formal plantings. HOAs in several Gwynedd Valley communities restrict plant heights, require specific mulch types, and mandate approval for front-yard changes. We review all HOA documents before finalizing planting plans.

Blue Tree Outdoor Living has served Gwynedd Valley and the surrounding Lower Gwynedd Township for decades, and has been in business for 43 years since founding in Norristown in 1983. Our Skippack Pike design center is approximately 25 minutes from Gwynedd Valley, an easy drive our teams make regularly. We have completed pool builds, hardscape projects, and long-term Healthy Yards programs throughout Lower Gwynedd Township, including properties along Penllyn Pike, Sumneytown Pike, and the Gwynedd Valley train station corridor. Zip codes 19002 and 19454 are part of our regular service rotation.

Gwynedd Valley homeowners expect quality and a contractor who can work within HOA frameworks without constant back-and-forth. Blue Tree's team has 13 to 14 year average employee tenure, which means the project managers and crew leaders on your job have deep experience with exactly this kind of Lower Gwynedd Township property. Chad Ochnich's ICPI certification ensures hardscape meets the structural standards required by township inspectors. Our pool team brings 15 years of pool construction experience and relationships with Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy equipment lines. We work with Belgard, Techo-Bloc, and Unilock paver systems and bring full design capability from our Skippack Pike design center.
