Gwynedd's zone 7a climate is hospitable for a wide palette, but the dominant reality on most older Gwynedd lots is heavy shade from mature hardwoods. Under these conditions, turfgrass performance is limited. We typically transition heavily shaded areas to shade-loving native ground covers: Pennsylvania sedge, wild ginger, Solomon's seal, native ferns, and wild blue phlox create a finished, low-maintenance look where turf struggles. For partially shaded borders and foundation plantings, oakleaf hydrangea, itea, and native azaleas perform reliably. On sunnier street-side exposures and newer cul-de-sac lots, native coneflower, ornamental grasses, and inkberry hedges are proven performers. Deer pressure is moderate to high in Upper Gwynedd's more wooded corridors, and we specify deer-resistant selections by default on perimeter plantings.
