Summer is here, which means longer days, beautiful sunshine, warmth… and the potential for lawn grubs. Grubs are a frustrating yard pest that can cause significant damage to your lawn before you even know they are there. Even worse, grubs love yards that homeowners put the most effort into — healthy, green, vibrant ones. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your yard against these pesky invaders.

Where Do Grubs Come From?

Grubs are the larvae of a variety of beetles. No matter where you live, there are beetles that will lay eggs in your lawn, and these grubs will spend the winter underground. In the spring and summer, they’ll start feeding on your turf roots.

Grubs are small, and most are white with brown heads – regardless of which beetle they come from. When disturbed, they’ll curl up into a “C” shape. Unfortunately, because they are so small and focus on your grassroots, you may not see them until the damage is already done. So you’ll need to look for other less-obvious signs of grub infestation.

Signs You’re Dealing With Yard Grubs

If you notice irregular brown patches in your yard, there could be a variety of causes. One of them may be grubs feeding in the area. You might also notice the lawn having a spongy feeling, which can be caused by these pests destroying the roots.

To know if grubs are the reason for discoloration, gently pull up a section of sod. If it comes out easily, you probably do have a grub problem since the roots should normally hold the grass down firmly. Next, check the top inch or so of soil. If you see more than four grubs per square foot, there’s an issue. Some lawns are so infested they have 40 or even 60 grubs per square foot.

If you find grubs, it’s time to take action.
